Barry University has announced the launch of an esports program beginning this fall. The school is in the process of constructing an esports gaming room that will support the team, which will compete against other college/university esports teams. The space will also support individual students interested in gaming. Led by Director of Athletics Michael L. Covone, the Barry esports program will be a member of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). Per the school, “because esports is a varsity program, student-athletes will be required to maintain appropriate training boundaries and a minimum GPA for eligibility to compete. The expectations of esports student-athletes are the same as those for student-athletes in other varsity programs.” While the majority of esports events will be online and without travel expense, there will be some opportunities for the Michigan Tech esports program to travel to competitions and tournaments. A brief history of esports: While the assumption is that esports are only a recent phenomenon, in reality the first esports event was held back in 1972, when Stamford University students competed against one another in the game Spacewar!
